Ask three carpet cleaning companies in Glasgow which method is best and you will get three answers, each one conveniently matching the machine that firm already owns. Here is the honest version.

There are two families of method: hot water extraction (what almost everyone calls steam cleaning) and low-moisture or dry cleaning. Neither is universally better. The right one depends on the fibre, the level of soiling and how fast the room has to be back in use.

Hot water extraction (steam cleaning)

Hot solution is injected into the pile under pressure and immediately vacuumed back out along with the suspended soil. It is the deepest clean available and the method the overwhelming majority of carpet manufacturers specify for warranty purposes.

Best for: synthetic carpet, wool blends, heavy soiling, pet odour, allergen removal, anything that has not been cleaned in years.
Trade-off: two to four hours dry time.

Low-moisture and dry cleaning

A compound or encapsulating polymer is worked into the pile with a brush, binds to the soil, and is vacuumed away. Very little water is involved.

Best for: delicate natural fibres, viscose, sisal and seagrass, commercial floors that must reopen within the hour, and interim maintenance between deep cleans.
Trade-off: it does not reach the base of a heavily soiled pile, and it will not fix pet odour.

Carpet shampooing — and why we do not do it

Rotary shampooing with a foaming detergent was the standard forty years ago. The problem is residue: unless the shampoo is fully rinsed out, it stays in the pile, stays sticky and attracts soil faster than before. A carpet 'shampooed' in Glasgow in January often looks dirtier by March than it did before it was done. If you want the shampoo effect without the penalty, that is exactly what pre-spray plus extraction plus a neutralising rinse delivers.

So which does your carpet need?

For the vast majority of Glasgow homes: hot water extraction, once every twelve months. For a viscose rug, a sisal stair runner, or an office that cannot close: low-moisture.
