Act in the first ten minutes
Blot, do not rub. Rubbing drives the pigment deeper into the fibre and frays the pile so the mark shows even after the colour goes. Press a clean white cloth straight down, lift, move to a dry section, repeat. Work from the outside of the spill inwards so you are not spreading it.
What actually works at home
Cool water and a little washing-up liquid, applied to the cloth rather than poured on the carpet, lifts most of a fresh spill. A weak solution of white vinegar helps on a stubborn edge. Keep blotting with dry cloth between applications — the goal is to transfer the wine out of the pile, not to soak it.
Three things that make it permanent
Hot water sets the tannin. Bleach or oxygen powders on wool strip the dye and leave a pale patch that cannot be undone. And supermarket 'stain sticks' often leave a sticky residue that attracts dirt, so in a month you have a grey shadow exactly where the wine was.

If the spill is more than a glass, if it has dried, or if the carpet is wool or a natural blend, stop.
